In the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, where heroes rest, we gather to celebrate another courageous member of the Williams family. Retired Air Force Colonel Edward "Steady Eddie" Levell Jr. -my cousin whose ancestry began as a Williams in our hometown of Jacksonville, Ala.-exemplifies not just personal achievement but also the spirit of service that inspires future generations.
As he joins my beloved brother Army Major Dwayne Williams, who was laid to rest here 24 years ago after dying in the 9/11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon, we reflect on Col. Levell's extraordinary journey and lasting legacy.
A Family Legacy of Service
The Levell and Williams families boast a proud tradition of military service. This legacy shapes our identities and influences how we view courage and sacrifice. Colonel Levell, affectionately nicknamed "Steady Eddie" for his remarkable skill as a fighter pilot, dedicated 30 years to the U.S. Air Force. He participated in over 150 combat missions in Southeast Asia, displaying exceptional courage under pressure.
His unwavering commitment inspired many family members. Following in the footsteps of my brothers Dwayne and Kim, I proudly joined the U.S. Air Force, dedicating over 18 years to serving our country -and continue to work for the military in Europe as a civilian. The values we carry—honor, duty, and loyalty—are deeply woven into the fabric of American military history.
The Life and Achievements of Col. Edward Levell Jr.
Col. Levell's journey began at the prestigious Air Force Academy, where he eventually served as the Deputy Commandant of Cadets. In this influential role, he commanded 40 Cadet Squadrons and mentored over 4,400 young men and women, shaping them into future leaders.

Under his guidance, countless cadets built their futures, fueled by the steady leadership of a man who embodied discipline, inspiration, and commitment. His nickname, "Steady Eddie," reflects his calm demeanor and unwavering focus—qualities vital for a fighter pilot engaged in combat.
Through his combat missions, Col. Levell refined his skills and actively participated in operations crucial to national security. His expertise in aerial combat not only earned him admiration from his peers but solidified his status as a respected leader within the Air Force.
The Impact on Future Generations
Col. Levell's legacy extends well beyond his impressive military career. His family, particularly his son Michael "Milo" Levell, stands proud and grateful. Milo recently expressed his appreciation to family and friends for their unwavering support during this challenging time and shared details about the upcoming funeral service. This service is more than a farewell; it is a celebration of a life devoted to service, honoring a father, a leader, and a constant figure in the lives of many.
Honoring a Hero’s Life
As Col. Levell's hero’s burial at Arlington National Cemetery approaches on Monday March 3, 2025, as a cousin this blog is my way of paying tribute to his life. Against the solemn backdrop of Arlington National Cemetery, family and friends will reminisce, share stories, express gratitude, and reflect on the profound impact he has made on all who knew him.
The atmosphere promises to be emotionally charged—a blend of sorrow for his departure and celebration of the immense contributions he made to his country and community. In honoring him, we also celebrate the values he embodied: courage, commitment, and compassion.
The Unseen Support Network
Behind every soldier is a community of family and friends who stand unwaveringly by their side. Cousin Col. Levell was fortunate to have a strong support network, those who cheered him on during his Air Force career and who continue to uplift him in these poignant moments. Their often-overlooked contributions are essential in commemorating a legacy of service.
As a proud member of the Williams family deeply rooted in the military community, with three brothers and countless other cousins, aunts and uncles who have served, I recognize the sacrifices made by families like my cousins the Levells. The emotional support, the care shown, and the relationships forged create a lasting impact—not only during active service but also in moments of reflection, like this upcoming funeral.
Carrying the Torch of Legacy
As we gather to honor Col. Edward "Steady Eddie" Levell Jr. next week on March 3, we celebrate his service and his legacy of honor, integrity, and excellence. He was not just a soldier but also a guide, a mentor, and a source of resilience for many.
With each passing year, our country is filled with stories of remarkable individuals who have served. Individuals like Col. Levell represent the spirit of selflessness that resonates throughout our nation’s history. Sharing these stories serves as a reminder of the freedoms we treasure.
Let us carry forward the torch of his legacy and inspire future generations to serve, just as he did.
In doing so, the memory of Col. Levell, like that of my brother Army Major Dwayne Williams, will continue to shine brightly for all who follow.
